Chiefs on the Verge of Joining Illustrious Company

In NFL history, four teams have truly achieved the elusive title of dynasty.

There was the Steel Curtain in the 70s, in which the Pittsburgh Steelers won four Super Bowls in six seasons under Chuck Noll.

Then, there was the poetic marriage between Bill Walsh and Joe Montana, guiding the San Francisco 49ers to four titles across the 80s while redefining the sport’s understanding of offense.

The Dallas Cowboys, and their dynamic triplets, won a trio of rings in a four-year span in the 90s.

And, finally, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots’ historic partnership saw two dynasties packed into a league-breaking 20 years.

That quartet helped set a standard that, even in the final days of the Pats’ latter dynasty, seemed unattainable. Yet, as he has since the moment he took over under centre in his sophomore year, Patrick Mahomes has made the notion of unattainability seem absurd.

Sunday's Super Bowl brings the chance of a fifth Super Bowl title, and a truly dynastic fourth in six years, for the Kansas City Chiefs. Title no. 5 would equal the 49ers and Cowboys and bring them to within one of the Steelers and Patriots.

NFL oddsmakers do expect Kansas City to retain its crown in New Orleans, as it opened at, and remain as, a 1.5-point favourite against the Philadelphia Eagles at BET99*.

Though a win on Sunday would see the Chiefs join historic company, it would also see them stand alone as the lone three-peat in league history. Regardless of Sunday’s result, the last seven years of NFL history has made one thing clear: Mahomes and the Chiefs are a union bound for the history books.
